I Automated My Social Media Posts With AI — Here's the Exact Workflow
I manage 3 social media accounts: Twitter (X), LinkedIn, and Instagram. Before AI, this took about 6 hours per week — planning, writing, designing, scheduling. Now it takes 30 minutes every other Sunday. Here's the exact system.
The Core Principle
I don't automate creation. I automate repurposing. One piece of long-form content (a video script, a blog post, a podcast episode) gets broken down into 15-20 social media posts. The AI handles the breakdown. I handle the quality control.
This is the key distinction that makes AI social media work. If you ask AI to create original posts from scratch, they'll be generic. If you feed it your existing content and ask for variations, they'll sound like you.
The System
Step 1: Create One Core Piece (2 hours/week)
Every week, I produce one substantial piece of content. Usually a YouTube script or a newsletter. This is the highest-effort part, and it's where I put my human creativity. The AI doesn't make this — I do, with AI assistance for structure and editing.
Step 2: AI Content Breakdown (15 minutes)
I take the finished script and feed it to ChatGPT with this prompt:
Here is my [video script/article]. Break this down into:
1. 5 Twitter/X threads (each 3-4 tweets)
2. 3 LinkedIn posts (professional tone)
3. 5 Instagram caption ideas (casual, with emojis)
4. 3 quote cards (one powerful sentence each)
5. 2 discussion questions to post as engagement bait
Keep my voice and style. Use the same examples and data from the original.
In one pass, I get 18 social media posts from a single piece of content. They reference the same examples, use the same data, and maintain a consistent voice because they're derived from my original work.
Step 3: Human Edit (10 minutes)
I quickly scan all 18 posts. I usually change about 20% — tweak a joke that doesn't land, add a personal detail the AI missed, adjust the tone for a specific platform. The edits take 10 minutes because the AI does most of the structural work correctly.
Step 4: Visuals with Canva AI (5 minutes)
For Instagram and LinkedIn (which need visuals), I use Canva's bulk create feature. I paste my caption text, and Canva AI generates a set of branded graphics. I pick the best ones, adjust colors if needed, done.
Step 5: Schedule (5 minutes)
I use a scheduling tool to queue 2 weeks of posts. Takes 5 minutes to upload and schedule. After that, I don't think about social media for 14 days.
Results After 3 Months
- Twitter: 320 → 1,100 followers
- LinkedIn: 180 → 540 followers
- Instagram: 90 → 230 followers
- Total weekly time: 30 minutes
The growth isn't viral. But it's steady, and it costs me almost no time. The key insight: consistency beats virality. AI makes consistency possible.
